SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

I’m Scot Matayoshi, and I am honored to serve as the State Representative for District 49, which covers parts of Kaneohe and Kailua.

My family is proud to call this community our home.  I currently serve as a member of the Hawaii United Okinawa Association's Legal Committee and am an active member of the Ko’olaupoko Hawaiian Civic Club.

I am passionate about working towards a vibrant, sustainable future for the State of Hawaii.  We need to preserve our environment, expand alternative energy, and develop our agricultural industry to achieve energy and food independence.

The need to diversify our economy and our over-reliance on tourism was made even more obvious during the pandemic.  We need other economic drivers that play to our strengths as an island state.

My family has served Hawai’i for four generations, a tradition I am proud to continue.  My parents, Ron, a recently-retired social worker, and Coralie, the former head of the American Red Cross of Hawaii, instilled in me a sense of responsibility for our community that they learned from their families.

My grandfather Herbert Matayoshi served as Mayor of the Big Island for 10 years, and my grandmother Mary Matayoshi is a lifelong educator who encouraged countless others to give back to their communities before running the Volunteer Resource Center of  Hawaii.  My goong goong, Peter Chun, was a former President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and an active member of his church.

I graduated from Punahou School and interned with U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka while attending Claremont McKenna College.  Knowing I had been blessed to receive an excellent education, I returned to Hawai’i after graduation to become a public school science teacher at Nanakuli High and Intermediate School while earning my Master’s degree in Education.  I eventually went on to pursue my law degree at the University of Hawaii, but still work to further education as a Board Member of the Malama Honua Public Charter School Foundation.

I will use all of my experiences to help make the Windward community a better and safer place to live.
